Christian missions and anti-gay attitudes in Africa

We argue that colonial Christian missions had a long-term impact on anti-gay attitudes in Africa. use geo-coded representative survey of African countries and the location historical to estimate significant economically meaningful association between proximity sentiments today. Using anthropological data pre-colonial acceptance homosexual practices among indigenous groups, we show establishment missions, while nonrandom, was exogenous pre-existing same-sex patterns population. The estimated effect is driven by persons faith statistically indistinguishable from zero samples Muslims, nonbelievers, followers traditional religions. Thus, our results are indicative causal missionary religious conversion Christianity.
